⁹ The ax ·is now ready to cut down [^Lalready lies at the root of] the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire [^Ca metaphor for judgment against those who disobey God].”

¹⁰ The ·people [crowd] asked John, “Then what should we do?”

¹¹ John answered, “If you have two ·shirts [tunics], share with the person who does not have one. If you have food, share that also [Is. 58:7].”
